What Is a ZIP Code?

A ZIP code (Zone Improvement Plan) is a 5-digit postal code used by the USPS to sort and route mail. The system launched July 1, 1963 to handle America's growing mail volume.

The first digit covers a broad region: 0 in the Northeast, 9 in the West. Each digit after that narrows it to a specific post office or delivery zone.

An extended ZIP+4 code (e.g., 90210-1234) adds four digits to zero in on a specific block or building.
